Memorandum of Understanding Paves Way for Energy Efficiency Improvements to Fort Drum, Fort Hamilton, West Point and other U.S. Army Facilities in New York State<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/em>New Agreement Will Unlock Opportunity for Economic Growth in Communities from Watertown to Rome and Beyond<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n WHITE PLAINS\u2014The New York Power Authority (NYPA) today announced a first-of-its-kind agreement with the United States Army. The signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) allows NYPA and the U.S. Army to collaborate on new opportunities that advance the Army\u2019s decarbonization initiatives at military facilities in New York State.<\/p>\n Under the MOU, NYPA, the nation\u2019s largest public power utility, and the Army will engage in discussions to explore undertaking energy efficiency improvements and decarbonization and resiliency measures at U.S. Army installations including Fort Drum, Fort Hamilton, and West Point. These efforts could lead to the development of on-site clean energy facilities at U.S. Army installations statewide and help the surrounding communities reduce their carbon footprint and improve energy efficiency.<\/p>\n NYPA President and CEO Justin E. Driscoll <\/strong>said,<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cThe Power Authority is honored to partner with the U.S. Army to explore opportunities to make some of the nation\u2019s most critical national security assets more energy resilient and energy efficient.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n Rachel Jacobson, Assistant Secretary of the Army (Installations, Energy & Environment) <\/strong>said, \u201cWe are very excited to explore these opportunities that will support the Army\u2019s national security mission and the energy goals of New York State. Increasing clean energy to improve resilience for both the Army and the state is a win-win for the nation and the people of New York.\u201d<\/p>\n Under the MOU, NYPA is authorized to provide low-cost energy, energy efficiency and conservation services and facilities that could assist the U.S. Army in future decarbonization and resiliency initiatives. NYPA and the U.S. Army may explore collaborations that could lead to the development of on-site carbon-free generation at Fort Drum, Fort Hamilton, the United States Academy at West Point with aspirations of expanding work to the following military establishments within the state: Watervliet Arsenal, Niagara Falls Air Reserve Base, Air Force Research Laboratory at Rome, Defense Finance Accounting Services at the former Rome Air Force Base, North East Air Defense Sector, Stewart Air National Guard Base, Hancock Field Air National Guard Base, Stratton Air National Guard Base and Air National Guard Base at Francis S. Gabreski Airport.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n This MOU will also create opportunities for local collaborations between military and civilian entities, including veteran-owned businesses, and streamline development of an energy efficient defense corridor that could cross from Watertown to Syracuse to Rome and beyond.<\/p>\n About NYPA\u202f\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n NYPA is the largest state public power organization in the nation, operating 17 generating facilities and more than 1,550 circuit-miles of transmission lines. More than 80 percent of the electricity NYPA produces is clean renewable hydropower.
