The Swiss elevator, escalator and moving walkway manufacturer Schindler introduces Schindler MetaCore, an innovative solution designed to enable building repurposing. The company’s new elevator retrofitting system provides an optimized traffic management platform that can serve different types of activities at one single location. By increasing a building’s flexibility, it makes the process of converting monofunctional towers into mixed-used ones simpler and more sustainable.

With Schindler MetaCore, buildings can maintain separate lobbies for different activities — office space, shopping, hotel or apartments — while using the same elevator group without users even noticing it. The solution addresses a crucial challenge that big cities like New York, San Francisco and Boston face: re-occupying an increasing number of empty towers. Renowned urbanists from American universities estimate that NYC has the equivalent of 26 Empire States worth of empty space that could be repurposed.

Dr. Florian Troesch, head of transit management and digital solutions at Schindler, explains that Schindler MetaCore presents architects, developers and building owners with a full suite of services, products and easily reprogrammable elevator systems. He also highlights that the solution helps to reduce the carbon footprint by eliminating the need for demolition and new construction.

“Mixed-use developments have many advantages. One of the biggest is that reusing what we already have is the most sustainable approach to change,” Troesch said.

Schindler MetaCore has been recognized by the global non-profit Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) with the 2023 Award of Excellence. The system allows office buildings to increase their longevity by giving them the option to reinvent themselves – seamlessly and endlessly.

About Schindler

Founded in Switzerland in 1874, the Schindler Group is a leading global provider of elevators, escalators, and related services.
